Grand Island Vibe | Winter-Spring 2019 a family commitment prevented them from visiting all of them on that particular Saturday. “He’s been really into reading lately,” Angelica told me as Jake purchased yellowed copies of two out of the three Lord of the Rings series at Alley Cat Antiques, our second stop. I later expected Jake to take home a sword he examined very closely, but he put it back (maybe it will end up under the Christmas tree with his name on it in a couple of months). Jake and his younger brother, Carter, who was tagging along with us, were finding inspiration in old architectural objects in the basement of the Heartland Antique Mall. They picked through piles of balusters and finials imagining what kind of furniture they could craft from the salvaged wood. “I prefer stores with fewer knick knacks,” Angelica replied when I asked her if she had a favorite Railside antique retailer. Their favorite at the moment is Railroad Towne Antique Mall, where they purchased items for their porch ensemble. However, Angelica was very smitten with the newest antique store in Railside, Farmhouse No. 508 Antiques. "This is my kind of store," she announced as we walked in. She hadn’t visited the Farmhouse, the westernmost antique shop on Third Street, before our little outing. The owners of the Farmhouse have sold antiques as vendors in Railside for years, but when a new opportunity presented itself last year they jumped on it and opened their own store.
